If you would like a larger lizard to start of with, bearded dragons (amphibolurus barbatus) are certainly a good choice, although they may be better for an adult keeper than for a child. They are a type of agamid lizard growing around 50cm(20in). All bearded dragons are captive-bred as Australia (their home country) does not allow the export of its wild animals.
